Maxine arrived at the restaurant early the way she always had, her keen, blue eyes scoping out the scene. Nothing she hadn’t seen before, especially in these types of places. Girls too beautiful to be seen with the men holding them. Men who couldn’t be seen with women that beautiful for fear of someone alerting their wives. Money changing hands, expensive cocktails flowing like water around the bar, a haze of cigar smoke in the patio seating. Her eyes flicked to her watch indifferently. Half an hour until her date would arrive. Plenty of time to do a little flirting.

She smoothed the hem of her bandage dress as she took a seat at the bar, scanning with sharp eyes for the interested gaze of a potential suitor. She wasn’t looking for a chiseled jaw, muscled arms, or a winning smile. Instead, the glint of a gold watch on the arm of an old man drinking hundred dollar scotch appealed to her. The outline of keys to a sports car tucked into loose trouser pockets. It was the air of careless luxury about a man. A thick wallet.

She hadn’t purchased the outfit she wore, nor her salon-perfect blonde hair or the veneers keeping her shark-like smile a perfect, glossy white. The designer, plastic nose of hers had been a gift from a potential suitor. She hadn’t gone to a movie on a first date since she was eighteen. Now it was a four course meal, a bottle of white wine that cost more than some people’s engagement rings, and a payment made on her quickly dwindling student loans. Only the best would do for Maxine, and she found it in the worst men.

This man, Charles, was one of many in a long line of would-be suitors who found themselves caught up in hurricane Maxine. Nowhere near her league, money was their only appeal. Maxine, who was all charm and no money, enchanted them into letting their guard down just enough so that she could slip a pretty, manicured hand into their pockets.

She was too pretty, too smart, too good at listening to their problems to be real, but somehow, she’d always convinced them she was the real deal–their one shot at love. They’d do anything, spend anything, to keep her.

For a few months she’d string them along like this, sometimes multiple men at a time, until she grew bored or got what she needed. She’d inevitably dump them in the end, but not without tearing through their wallets and savings account first. Sooner or later, depending on how deep their pockets went, they’d be left among the wreckage of their finances, shaking their heads and wondering how it had happened to them. This was the power of a woman at her best. This was the power of Maxine.
