Rolling her eyes for the third time, Joanna waited impatiently for the moving crew to finish loading up the last of her soon-to-be-ex-husband’s boxes. She’d only been married to Ian for eleven months when she saw the nude gallery hidden on his phone.

The photo in particular that sealed Joanna and Ian’s fate was of a young and surgically enhanced set of breasts framed with red curls that were so effortlessly perfect, they had to have been extensions. Although the face had been cropped out of every photo in the gallery, Joanna could have picked out those double D’s and long, fiery locks anywhere–Katy, Ian’s twenty-two-year-old paralegal.

Their explosive confrontation centered around Katy and only ended when Ian finally admitted that he’d been having an affair and planned to file for divorce. After Ian left, Joanna walked the halls with a bottomless glass of wine and contemplated how she would start again at thirty-six. She felt thankful she’d always been fashion-forward and body conscious, considering her fears of starting over after her second failed marriage.

She stumbled slightly as she ran her manicured nails along the wall on the way to the garage door. Turning the handle, she felt around for the light for a few moments before illuminating the room. It was mostly empty except for one covered, and coveted, vehicle–Ruby.

Kicking her nude pumps off onto the garage floor, she took another gulp of wine. She grabbed a fistful of the black cloth and walked backwards to slowly reveal the cherry red paint of the 1969 convertible. It was Ian’s most prized possession, making Joanna third on his list of cherished females in his life.

Staring at it, she felt a sweet sense of satisfaction imagining what his face would look like when he realized she’d sold it. He may have been cautious enough to make Joanna sign a prenuptial agreement, but he carelessly placed her name on the title to Ruby in a time of need, making this the perfect red revenge to his twenty-two-year-old mistake.

Content with her plan, Joanna decided to drink the last of the bottle and take a bubble bath before bed. She ran the water, dropped in the strawberry bath bombs she’d bought for a special couples bath that never happened, and blared a sassy breakup playlist on her newly downloaded streaming radio app. With the fluffy, top layer of bubbles near the middle of the claw foot tub, Joanna took a moment to look at her reflection in the bathroom’s full-length mirror.

Pulling her clothes off and letting them fall to a pile on the floor, she gazed upon her fair, naked body, critiquing as she thought a first time lover would. Running her hands through her blonde, shoulder-length hair and down her slender body, she tried to remember the last time Ian had touched her that gently…or at all. He’d been so busy handling his latest lawsuit, and Katy, that he’d forgotten to seduce his wife.

Shrugging her shoulders, Joanna dipped a toe into the bubble bath to test the water before slipping in and releasing a sigh of relaxation. She loved the way the warm water around her curves made her feel so comforted and safe. The music played song after song, blaring women empowerment and post-breakup anthems fit for any situation.

After a few minutes, Joanna closed her eyes and rested her head against the edge of the tub. She thought about the last time she genuinely felt sexy, and what she could do to bring that feeling back. She decided that in the morning she’d go shopping for a new style to help her find that side of her again. Maybe something in red, she thought.
