The Billionaire’s New Toy

Claire took a deep breath and shuffled her papers for the third time. She’d done her homework. In fact, she’d spent the last week putting all the details together. The number of hotels the franchise had, how many guests per year, laundry uses, the cost of her competitors, etc. That is, if her sources could be trusted.

Thankfully, her boss hadn’t found out how she got most of the information. She didn’t usually use her looks to get ahead professionally, really she didn’t, but the Brenton Hotel employee just happened to be good-looking and also had the information she needed. She had ended up dating him for a few weeks, then she broke it off. The fact that he had spilled the beans on everything she needed to know by that point was purely coincidental.

Usually, she had no problem making sales calls at her desk, out in the open where anyone could overhear her, including her boss. But this was no ordinary sales call. This one call could hit her sales quota for the next year.

She wished she could say she didn’t need this, but that would be untrue. Months of subpar sales had taken a toll on her budget, and her boss had already started dropping hints that she needed to improve her numbers if she wanted to keep her job. It wasn’t completely her fault that a lot of her clients went with a different company. Some of them had gone out of business or moved overseas.

The door clicked behind her as she stepped inside the empty conference room. This was the only place in the building where she could make the call without prying ears. She fixed herself a cup of coffee, adding the creamer and sugar at a deliberate pace, as if she were looking for an excuse not to call. It wasn’t that she was trying to get out of it, just that she wanted to be ready.

After a few minutes of spreading out her reports and graphs on the polished conference table, the coffee still sat untouched. The only other thing in front of her was the telephone. She wiped her palm on her skirt and reached for the receiver.

She tapped the button for an outside line and glanced at the first page in her packet. The bottom of her heel tapped against the charcoal gray carpet as it rang. This was going to work. It had to.

“Brenton Hotels, how may I help you?”

She took a deep breath. “Yes, I’m looking to speak with Connor Brenton.”

There was a pause on the other end. “He is unavailable at the moment, but is there something I can help you with? If you were to leave a message, I’ll make sure it goes to one of his managers.”

Great. The gatekeeper is shutting me out already. “I have some business to discuss with Mr. Brenton. It will only take a few minutes.”

“I’m terribly sorry, but Mr. Brenton prefers that a message be taken when he is unavailable. If it’s something he feels needs his attention directly, he’ll give you a call back.” The lady did a fine job at sounding pleasant, but Claire could tell it was forced.

“I completely understand. Thank you for your time.” She pressed the button to release the call and slumped the head of the phone against her forehead. Wonderful.

At the very bottom of her stack, there lay a single piece of paper with a phone number on it. Every other paper was filled top-to-bottom with information, but this one held nothing other than a handwritten ten digit number. And she’d hoped she didn’t have to use it.

But the bitch didn’t put me through, she thought. It wasn’t her fault. She had merely been doing her job. Just like Claire was doing hers.

The phone rang. It was a roll of the dice. If she didn’t use it, she would probably never get the appointment, so it was worth the gamble.

   “This is Connor.”
